Terrorism is one of the greatest threats America faces today. There have been many famous terrorist groups, but the most famous terrorist group right now is ISIS. ISIS was responsible for the attacks in Paris in 2016, the attacks in Belgium, and many more. Many analysts have said that ISIS is now a bigger threat than Al-Qaeda, and that is huge. Al-Qaeda is the terrorist group, who was responsible for the September 11, 2001 attacks, and ISIS is a bigger threat. They are ruthless. They have been known to burn people alive, force children to be soldiers, throw homosexual men off buildings, murder children, and many more horrific things. ISIS is the most dangerous terrorist group around today. President Barack Obama says, “There is no doubt that if they get their hands on nuclear weapons, they will use them to kill as many people as possible.” ISIS is dangerous without nuclear materials. If they got their hands on them, they would be capable of mass destruction.
ISIS started in the 2000s as an Al-Qaeda spin off group and soon became more independent from them. In April of 2013, Al-Baghdadi says that the group previously known as Islamic State of Iraq, abbreviated as ISI, would now be known as the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant, which is abbreviated as ISIS. That is when ISIS was officially created. That is when ISIS was put on the map. All throughout 2014, ISIS continued to grow and commit more acts of violence. For example, on August 19, 2014, a United States journalist, James Foley, who was missing since 2012, was filmed and decapitated by ISIS soldiers. On October 3, 2014, ISIS releases a video of them beheading Alan Henning, who was a British captive. These videos are some of the minor acts of terror ISIS commits. This is when ISIS gets there foot in the door and basically says, “Yes we are a force to be reckoned with.” In 2015 the attacks get worse. On February 3, 2015, ISIS releases a video of a man named Moath al-Kasasbeh being trapped in a cage, drenched in inflammable fluid, and burned alive. This was one of the most horrific events ISIS has ever demonstrated. Although only one life was taken, the way it was taken shows that this group wants to strike fear into the hearts of the viewers. It shows that they want people to be terrified of them. If they had a nuclear weapon, the damage they could do would be horrific. ISIS possessing nuclear materials would be a horrible and devastating blow to the US and to most of Europe. We have seen what they have been capable of without nuclear materials. If they possessed them, who knows how much damage they could do. We need to figure out how close ISIS is to possessing nuclear materials so we can plan for the worst. ISIS can attack us with nuclear weapons in three different ways. They can attack a nuclear facility, create a dirty bomb, or create an actual fission bomb, similar to the one that detonated of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Two days after the ISIS attacks in Brussels, a security guard at a Belgium nuclear facility was murdered. It was not proven that ISIS was responsible, but it did scare a lot of people. The possibility of a dirty bomb is also very intimidating. A dirty bomb would be a lot easier to make as opposed to attacking a nuclear facility, because there are a lot more radioactive materials all around the world that can be used to make a dirty bomb. The third possibility of creating a fission bomb would be very challenging to do because the materials are so rare. Not even some well developed countries have fission bombs, so the possibility of ISIS having one is small. Overall, there is a pretty good chance of ISIS getting their hands on nuclear materials, but the only question is “When will they?” Any terrorist organization possessing nuclear materials is very dangerous. That especially goes for ISIS. If they get there hands on nuclear materials, many countries will be at risk to a nuclear attack. In my opinion, a nuclear attack will eventually happen from some organization or country. Whether it is North Korea or ISIS, I believe there will be a nuclear attack at some point, which is why we should be ready. The United States should be ready for a nuclear attack. They should put some of their best minds on the task of creating something that will protect the citizens of the United States from a nuclear attack. Eventually the day will come when some very bad organization gets ahold of nuclear materials and decides to use them against us. Will we be ready?
